Me-Made-June 2011: Dani 28., 29. i 30. / Days 28, 29 and 30

Day twenty eight.

A shirt from BWOF 1/2008, #108 with alterations on sleeves, front panel and collar.

Day twenty nine.

Purple dress I made last month. Can't believe I'm wearing it (along with the thights!) at the end of June. It's freaking cold here these days.

Dan trideseti.

Stigosmo do kraja meseca.

Day thirty.

It's the end of the month. The challenge's been much easier this time - I find it much easier to match the summer wardrobe than the winter one. A few weather surprises made it possible to show a variety of season-vise garments.
Today's outfit:
Shirt from BWOF 1/2008, #108 with alterations on sleeves, front panel and collar.
Jacket from BWOF 8/2009, #119 with pattern alterations.

Pitanja i odgovori, deo II / Q&A, part 2

  5. Colette Patterns sajt i blog. Sari, autorka bloga, prodaje svoje retro inspirisane krojeve, ali povremeno izbaci i poneki besplatan kroj. Meni su svi njeni krojevi prelepi!

Few days ago I got a several similar questions from my readers, so I thought the answers might be interesting to everyone.

The first question was related to the Spanish Patrones magazine - unfortunately, this magazine can not be bought in Serbia. A few issues of the magazine that I have were bought in Spain while I was staying there, or were brought back to me by my Spanish teachers (I've been learning Spanish for 3 years now) when they went back home for holidays. However, you can subscribe for the magazine via this website.
I find Patrones very interesting, it offers very interesting and youthful models, but I had problems with defining the right size - some patterns fitted well, while the others were too big. The sizes are not the same as the ones in Burda Style magazines, and the proportions differ, so I needed some time to get used to it.

The second question was related to the downloadable patterns. Here are some of the websites that I know of - if you know of any other site, it would be great if you could write them down in the comments.
  1. Burda Style website offers a lot of patterns in PDF format. You need to print the file and join the papers together to get a pattern. Most of the patterns were published by the website itself, and lately there can be found patterns published by the Burda Style magazine. Also, you can find a lot of patterns made by the website's users (that are usually free of charge). You need to register to the website, which is also free of charge.
  2. Also, Modern Sewing website offers a lot of downloadable patterns, and they're all free of charge.
  3. Russian website Lekala offers numerous patterns, most of them being charged for. I was lucky to find the website during its promotion when all the patterns were free. Follow the site on a regular basis and you might catch another promotion.
  4. Brazilian magazine Manequim offers some of its patterns in PDF file format. The patterns they offer for download free of charge changes periodically, so I advise you to download the pattern when you find it, or you might loose your chance for it. The whole collection of their patterns can be found here.
The website is in Portuguese, but I think you'll manage it.
  5. Colette Patterns website and blog. Sari, the author sells her vintage inspired patterns, but she offers some free patterns from time to time. I love all of her patterns!
  6. This website offers a lot of patterns for children. I don't know whether all of them are free of charge.
  7. This website is in Spanish, it also offers patterns.
  8. French website with patterns.
  9. And, for adventurous, japanese patterns, with instructions in Japanese :). The instructions are illustrated, so I think you can follow them.

Me-Made-June 2011: Dani 25., 26. i 27. / Days 25, 26 and 27

Day twenty five.

Shorts made using the BWOF 6/2008, #103 pattern, with alterations on waist, pockets and legs. This is my favorite shorts pattern, and I made several pairs of bermudas and shorts using it.

Dan dvadeset šesti.

Suknja koju sam sama modelovala.

Day twenty six.

A skirt I drafted myself. It has 3 pleats on front and back panels. Yesterday was a windy day, and I was completely unprepared for impersonating Marilyn Monroe - I flashed several times, giving the passers by an exclusive view :-).
The jacket is thrifted.

Hmmm... sinoć mi nogavice nisu delovale TOLIKO duge...
Bluza je kupljena.

Night twenty six.

It cooled down during the night, so I changed to warmer clothes.
The pants are made using the Bella pattern from Burda Style website, with major alterations. Hmmm.. the legs didn't look THAT long to me last night...
The blouse is thrifted.

Day twenty seven.

Today's one of those I-have-nothing-to-wear days (I blame it on the PMS - my judgement's not to be trusted on those days!). The pants are made using the BWOF 8/2009, #106 pattern.

Me-Made-June 2011: Dani dvadeset treći i dvadeset četvrti / Days twenty third and twenty fourth

Day twenty three.

A silk dress made using Patrones No. 269, #31 (Van Dos) pattern. I tried a similar dress before making this one, and I was pretty amazed by how it looked on me (to be honest, I expected to look like I was 8 months pregnant). When I saw the pattern in the magazine, I couldn't resist it, so here's the result. The neckline, belt and skirt hem are made out of mat satin, that calms down a bit the explosive print.
What I really like about the dress is that I can wear it with or without the belt, each variation gives a different look. First half of the day I wore the dress with the belt, but removed it for the night out and enjoyed the flowy silk.

Suknju sam sama modelovala.
Haljina je postavljena tankim belim pamukom.

Day twenty four.

This dress is a combination of JJ blouse pattern, Ute blouse pattern and my redrafting. I used the JJ blouse for defining the bodice of the dress. It is cut under bust and incorporates gathered bust panel, that gives the dress a bit of ethno look (it reminds me of dirndl blouses and ensembles). The back of the bodice is altered as well, so it has 2 darts instead of shoulder princess seams. For the sleeves I used the Ute sleeve pattern, but cropped it a bit. The skirt is self drafted.
The dress is fully lined with lightweight cotton.

Svetski putnik / A world traveler

I think I haven't talked enough about the dress known as Dots Invasion. This young lady is a true world traveler, did you know?
The dress started its wild life in Belgrade, Serbia, not so long ago, in 2009. An inspiration for making it came from the fabric itself, which was quite untypical for my taste which leans towards classic. The pattern was specially drafted to accentuate the best part of the fabric - borders on both sides of it.
The dress provoked reactions from the very first day of its life - some praised it, the others criticized it. Some judged our friendship, saying that maxi dress wasn't my best choice. However, none of us paid much attention to what was said.
First Invasion's trip was with me - straight to Barcelona, Spain. She was still shy at the moment, not letting me take a photo of her. Short afterwards, she was spotted by the editor of the USA magazine Sew News, who invited my companion to an interesting trip to Colorado. There, the dress beat her shyness and acted like a professional photo model. She acted quite well, I'd say, since her photos ended up on the cover of the magazine!
Few days later, she came back to her native Belgrade, Serbia, where she didn't stay long. She decided to visit Zurich, Switzerland, where a good friend of mine lives. It was a love at first sight, and the dress decided to make a homeland of chocolate her own home, where she's being well taken care of now. And then, few days ago, she got a great opportunity to spend a few days in sunny Portugal. She sent me a few postcards from there, just to make me jealous, in which she succeeded!

And, just when I managed to get over her leave, a new star was born on the other side of the world, in the USA! The two quite look alike; if I haven't known better, I would have thought they were siblings.

Anyway, I think it's time to sew a new dress and get over the loss of the beloved Invasion. I wish her a lot of beautiful travels and sunny days on exotic destinations!

Me-Made-June 2011: Dani dvadeset prvi i dvadeset drugi / Days twenty one and twenty two

Day twenty first.

The Modern sewing pattern, that I previously used for another dress (I'll show it to you in the following days)
I really like this pattern, and ever since I made the white dress, I’ve been thinking about making few more variations. I wanted to accentuate the crossed lines with contrasting colors, and when I found this double faced fabric, I knew I had to give it a try. The dress is made from 20 pieces, most of them with curvy, concave or convex shape, so I felt like I was building a puzzle while sewing it. Add to that the checkered pattern I tried to match on all these pieces, and you’ll get the idea of the amount of work it took. I didn’t manage to match all the check lines, but I think I did a good job in the end.
The front keyhole, neckline and armscyes are finished with navy cotton bias band. I was thinking about making bias band out of the fashion fabric, but then I thought it would be too much. So, I opted for the easier solution.

Day twenty two.

The pattern comes from the Leko web site, #5681, with few alterations.
I had two takes on this skirt, and the first one was a failure due to inadequate skirt shape. It turned out that a pencil skirt made of bias cut fabric is a big NO NO on my body. So, the first skirt went to my brother’s girlfriend, who’s 2 sizes smaller than me.
So, for the second skirt I altered the pattern a bit – made it slightly A shaped, which looked much better on me. Also, the original pattern had identical front and back pieces, which had no waist darts. That seemed odd to me, so I made few more alterations, which incorporated separate front and back waist pieces with waist darts.

Me-Made-June 2011: Dani devetnaesti i dvadeseti / Days nineteen and twenty

Day nineteen.

A pair of comfy linen pants that I made back in 2006. I can't remember which pattern I used. I love wearing them, though I sometimes feel as if I'm wearing my PJs :-).

Bluza - Burda 10/2004, #116

Day twenty.

This is, pattern vise, the same outfit I wore on day four. When I like a pattern, I like it in multiples.
Skirt - BWOF 2/2007, #113, blogged about it here.
Blouse - BWOF 10/2004, #116

Me-Made-June 2011: Dan osamnaesti / Day eighteen

Day eighteen.

Wearing red again, just to show you I can take my own advice :-).
This is a linen dress, made after a RTW dress I have. It's really cozy, perfect for hot days like today.

Me-Made-June 2011: Dan sedamnaesti / Day seventeen

Day seventeen.

I bought this gorgeous shantung silk on a discount, since it was a leftover, around 1.20m long (1.40m wide). I knew I wanted to make a dress out it, but I was restricted by the amount of fabric. So, I decided to make another variation of the Bordeaux dress. I didn’t have enough fabric for neckline yoke facings, so I used leftovers of some satin I had in my stash. It made the inside of the dress so pretty and interesting. Also, I finished the seam allowances using the Hongkong finish technique, using self made bias strips.
The dress was featured in the Sew News magazine. Also, you can download the pattern for the dress from the Download tab.
A note to myself: wear red dresses more frequently - you'll get a lot of positive feedback from people in the street!

Me-Made-June 2011: Dani petnaesti i šesnaesti / Days fifteen and sixteen

Dan petnaesti.

JJ košulja sa Burda Style sajta, koju sam prepravila kako bih dobila nafaltani prednji gornji panel, i rukave u obliku zvona. Prepravljeni kroj možete skinuti, u veličini 38, sa Download taba.

Day fifteen.

The JJ shirt from Burda Style website, that I altered to get a pleated front bib and bell shaped sleeves. You can download the altered pattern, in size 38, from the Download tab.

Dan šesnaesti.

Danas je bila ludnica na poslu. Bukvalno.

Day sixteen.

It's been a crazy day at work. Literally.

The dress pattern comes from Patrones No. 269, #36 (Lasserre). I latered the skirt part a bit - instead of gathers on the waist I made a huge pleat on both front and back panels.

Jun 14, 2011

Me-Made-June 2011: Dan četrnaesti / Day fourteen

Dan četrnaesti.

Danas nosim svoju novu haljinu, koju sam sašila pre neki dan.

Day fourteen.

Today I'm wearing a brand new dress, sewn few days ago. The top comes from Burda Style magazine 5/2011, #128, with few alterations. The original pattern has a rather wide and sloppy back that I didn't like, so I fitted it to my measurements. Also, I omitted the collar, since I run out of fabric. The skirt is self drafted.

Jun 13, 2011

Me-Made-June 2011: Dan trinaesti / Day thirteen

Day thirteen.
Ute blouse from the Burda Style website. This is, actually, a wearable muslin - the blouse turned out better than I expected, so I finished the muslin and now I wear it with joy. The only flaw it has is the fabric I used - a cotton that's so difficult to iron...

Jun 12, 2011

Me-Made-June 2011: Dani jedanaesti i dvanaesti / Days eleven and twelve

Day eleven.
Shirt - JJ patern with alterations: the shirt includes a pleated bib. You can find detailed instructions on how to alter JJ into this shirt here. If you're size 38, you can download the pattern for this shirt from the Download tab (free of charge!).
Cropped jacked made of cotton flannel back in 2005, using a BWOF 5/2003, #101 pattern.

Day twelve.
Shirt - JJ pattern from BurdaStyle website. I altered the pattern a bit, by adding bias pintucks on the center front panel.
Cropped cotton flannel jacket, made 5-6 years ago, using a BWOF 6/2005, #127 pattern.

Day ten.
I'm wearing a shirt I made using the  BWOF 1/2008, #108 pattern, with alterations on front panel and sleeves.
The photos are from my office, and I was laughing like a crazy woman while my colleague tried to photograph me :-).

Me-Made-June 2011: Dani osmi i deveti / Days eight and nine

Day eight.
A blouse made using the JJ pattern from Burda Style website. You can read the story that stands behind it here.

Day nine.
This dress is a knock-off of the Knip mode dress I saw on Sigrid’s blog.
If you haven’t read her blog so far, you should really take a look, since Sigrid is a skillful seamstress with a great sense of style. Besides, she is so generous with sharing tips and tricks of the trade. This is not the first garment I made that was inspired by Sigrid’s work.
The dress is not an identical twin of the original, it’s more like a very-look-alike-younger-sister :)
I liked a lot the origami detail on the front neckline and did an intense brainstorming before figuring out how it was done. To tell you the truth, it’s not that difficult to draft it! I might post a tutorial on it.
The dress is fully lined and it has an invisible zipper installed at the back center seam

Me-Made-June 2011: Dani šesti i sedmi / Days six and seven

I koštala me tričava 3 eura!

Day six.
Patrones No. 269, #28 (Tintoretto) pattern. This dress turned out a bit different than the original pattern. I have to work on understanding the Patrones’ sizing. I had to narrow the whole dress a LOT. Approximately, 15cm in the waist area! After resizing it, I didn’t want to experiment with the sleeves, so I omitted them. Also, I slightly changed the neckline – made 2 pleats instead of 4. The dress is fully lined. I used thin white cotton.
All in all, I think it is one cute dress. And I can say it was a cheap one – cost me approx. 3 euros.

Suknju sam porubila cik-cak bodom u 3 sloja.

Day seven.
I guess this isn’t polka dot ornament. But it is dotty though… I was restricted by the amount of fabric I had – approximately 0.70m, so I had to fit the pattern to the fabric. Since I couldn’t find an appropriate skirt model in my BWOF stash, I decided to make one myself. The skirt has lining made out of red crepe viscose. I didn’t hem the skirt, but serged it – I don’t have a serger, so I used thin zig zack stitch and run it 3 times on both the skirt and the lining.

Me-Made-June 2011: Dan peti / Day five

Day five

I made this skirt to match my shoes :-)
I used the BWOF 10/2005, #121 pattern, with few alterations. The fabric is satin, cut on bias, which gives the skirt a soft wave.

Me-Made-June 2011: Dan četvrti / Day four

Day four
This is one of my favorite summer outfits.
The skirt is made of silk, lined with viscose georgette. BWOF 2/2007, #113.
The blouse is made of satin, BWOF 10/2004, #116

Day three.
Today I'm wearing my infamous dress that has leaf shaped pleats on the front. I drafted the pattern myself, and you can read the tutorial on the drafting process on the Sew News website, where it's published. Also, you can download the pattern for it from the Download tab of the blog.
Since today's a cloudy day, I'm wearing a light jacket that I've already shown you in my previous posts. I made it specially for the Burda Style website. You can read more details on it in this post.

A random shot from the last night: a few of my dresses hanged on hangers after ironing them. Don't they look like a flag together?
