New York, New York!

Dear readers, the D day has gotten very close - I'm leaving tomorrow to New York City, to the promotion of The Burda Style Sewing Handbook, for which I had the honor to sew a blouse. The book promotion party is scheduled for November 10th, but I'll work as an intern at Burda Style for a month. To be honest, I am very excited about it, and I think I'm a bit nervous too! I can't wait to see the book, as well as to meet in person all the team members and the website members with whom I've had a correspondence.
I'll try to keep you posted about all the happenings and to share with you my impressions about the book, about the website from another point of view, and of course - about NYC. Until then, enjoy the song which describes exactly how I feel at the moment...

Blog nagrada / Blog award

Carolyn passed me a blog award a few days ago. I received the same award ages ago from Raki, but since I had received the same award at the time, I felt it would be too much to write a same post twice. Either way, I'd like to thank them both for the lovely gesture!

The award rules say I have to write down 7 random facts about me. Since I already have a post on the subject, I'll share with you just one interesting detail about me. I was very inspired by Lavender's post she wrote the other day, where she described her haircuts in the last 5 years.
Unlike her, I haven't changed my looks a lot in the past 10 years. I had some slight length differences, I even tried dyeing it in some reddish shade (which, unfortunately, looked awful!), but I looked more or less the same as I do now. However, when I was 19, I had a drastic haircut and overall looks change. I cut my hair really short and I started doing makeup. I was surprised by how the haircut affected my image. But the style change was positive and I think it was then that I realized what direction I should follow.
I had this look for a year and a half, and then let the hair grow, being influenced by my boyfriend at the time. It took 2 years to grow, and I went through all the silly phases in that period :-). Many of my friends are categorical in the attitude that I look better with a long hair. However, I'm undefined. From time to time I think of cutting it again, but I don't have enough courage to do it. What freaks me the most is the time it needs to grow. When you're 20, wacky hair does not make you look like an idiot. I'm not so sure it's the same when you're 32...
The picture below was taken back in 1998. I think my face hasn't changed much since then.

I, na kraju, evo liste blogova kojima prosleđujem nagradu:

Finally, here is a list of blogs I am passing the award to:
  1. Magrit
  2. Kroki
  3. Lavender, Threadsquare
  4. Don, Urbandon
  5. Stacy, Stacyverb
  6. The Sew Convert
  7. Lisa Jane, Lisa Jane Sews

Još jedna košulja / Another shirt

Another shirt is finished. As Dragica has said, they're becoming my trade mark. An interesting thing is that I used to dislike the shirts - I was sure they didn't suit me. Perhaps I've learned how to style them in the meanwhile?
Again, it's a variation on the BWOF 1/2008, #108 blouse pattern. The fabric is striped, where navy stripes are followed by stripes in various colors. I arranged them so that the yellow and pink stripes are on the front, green stripes on the back and purple and orange ones on the sleeves. This shirt has double button closure too.

Also, this is one of the rare opportunities to see me with a straight hair. Occasionally, usually when I do my haircut, I straighten it, just to break the monotony. The hair-do lasts for few days, if I'm lucky to have a dry weather.

Crvena prugasta košulja / A red striped shirt

The last in the series of shirts I've been sewing. This time I used a striped fabric whose stripes change in the center: one half of the fabric has thin, and the other half has thick red stripes. Combined together, the stripes make an interesting effect.
I used a tried and trued pattern from the Spanish Patrones (which had some sizing issues I managed to fix). The thick stripes are laid horizontally, while the thin ones are laid vertically, as you can see on the pictures.

Another shirt is cut and ready to be sewed. You might be bored with all these shirts, but I'm currently in the mood for sewing them.

Brojna lica bluze iz Burde 1/2008, #108 / Numerous faces of the blouse BWOF 1/2008, #108

Pre par meseci sam pisala o tome koliko koristim ovaj kroj za bluzu, i kako ga prepravljam svaki put kako bih dobila novi model. A onda pomislih - zašto ne bih napisala post o tome kako zapravo menjam kroj. Da podsetim, kroj u originalu izgleda ovako. Sasvim zgodno, paspul u šavovima naglašava linije kroja.

Few months ago I wrote about how much I use this blouse pattern, and how I alter it every time to make a new model. Then I thought - why not write a post about this? To remind you, the original pattern looks like this. Quite convenient, the piping accentuates the cutting lines on the shirt.

And this is how the pattern looks - the pic shows only front pattern pieces.

Varijacija #1

Variation #1
Most often, I merged the front top side and bottom pieces into one panel. As you can see, the two parts perfectly fit together, hence removing the seam between them wouldn't change the shape of the blouse, but it reduces the amount of job.

A evo kako gotova košulja izgleda.

And here's how the finished shirt looks like. As I said, it has the same shape as the original.

Varijacija #2
Malo veću izmenu kroja možete videti na slici ispod. Gornje delove sam spojila u jednu celinu.

Variation #2
A bigger pattern alteration can be seen on the picture below. I merged the front top panels int one piece. As you can see, the panels form a dart on the bottom. After that, I altered the bottom panel - the graphed area represents the change of the original shape. You can see that I also altered the center top panel, by cutting off the same shape from its bottom. You can additionally change the bottom panel, which can give an interesting effect on striped fabrics: the panel can be cut horizontally, and the pattern pieces can be laid down so that the stripes change their direction, as illustrated on the picture with the arrows.

Evo kako ove izmene izgledaju na košulji.

Here's how these alterations look on a shirt.

Varijacija #3
Kada šijete bluzu, naberite gornji deo brusne.

Variation #3
The pic bellow illustrates the alterations that give an interesting detail: a gathered horizontal dart placed under the bust. Merge the pattern pieces gotten by the previous alteration, so that they form a perfectly straight line along the button closure. You'll notice that the panels form a horizontal dart. Spread the top panel as shown on the picture. When sewing a blouse, gather the top part of the dart.

Evo kako košulja izgleda.

And here's how the shirt looks.

Varijacija #4

Variation #4
You'll get a romantic, vintage looking blouse with the following alterations. Copy the top panel, gotten by alterations for the Variation #2, to a new piece of paper. Draw a few lines that connect the shoulder line with the bottom of the panel. Make sure the lines are equally spread. Cut the panel along the drawn lines and spread it as shown on the pic. The more you spread the pattern, the more gathers the blouse will have.

Evo kako ova bluza izgleda.

Here's how this blouse looks.

These four alterations give numerous options, that can all look completely different. Combined with different fabric patterns, collar and sleeve shapes, each variation has its own charm and looks totally different from the others.

Košulja u duginim bojama / A rainbow shirt

I've been compensating these days for not sewing a thing during July, August and September :-).
I made another shirt. I used the BWOF 1/2008, #108 pattern, but I altered it a lot in order to use the fabric in the best possible way. The fabric is striped, but the stripes change from one side of the fabric to the other, so it looks as if it has a border. I thought for a while about how to arrange the stripes on the shirt and I finally had an idea.

Pruge sa bordure sam postavila vodoravno, a ostale vertikalno.

The striped from the border are laid out horizontally, while the remaining stripes stand vertically.

I spiced it up additionally with a double button closure with horizontal stripes.

A reader sent me an email asking me to help her draft a pants pattern. I have to say: I've never dratfted a pants pattern, I've always used commercial patterns. In time I learned which models suite me and how to redraft and alter patterns to make them fit me. Also, I've never taken any drafting classes, and I don't have any formal education on the subject, since I'm completely self taught.

However, I've been browsing for any sort of literature I could find on the internet, that covers the subject. Here are a few references you might want to look if you want to learn how to draft the pants pattern, or how to  fit the pattern to your specific measurements:
  • Gedwoods, a member of the Burda website wrote an excellent tutorijal, which gives detailed instruction on how to draft a pants pattern.
  • Don, an autor of the fabulous blog Weekend Designer  wrote a post about drafting a pattern for classic jeans.
  • Here's another article, that gives instructions for drafting a man's pants pattern.
  • New Mexico State University has an excellent article that gives an advice about choosing the right pants model and how to redraft it to make it fit your body.
  • Sarai, who's a designer and owner of the Colette Patterns has a series of posts about pants on her blog, that treat all sorts of pants fitting issues in detail.
  • Sunni, author of the blog A Fashionable Stitch also has a serial of  postovs about pants.
  • Claire Kennedy also has a very interesting article on her blog about pants.
  • The Sewing Divas blog has an interesting article on how to widen pants legs in the tights area.
  • Threads magazine has an article that also describes alterations on pants patterns.
Do you have any additional advice or reference that might be helpful?

This spring I found in local Italtes stores (they sell fabrics per kilo) a lot of striped fabrics for shirts. I bought a lot of fabrics - 21m (0.90m wide)! The fabric was really cheap, one shirt will cost me approximately 3 euros, and I have enough fabric for 7 shirts, and I'll have remnants that I plan to combine with other fabrics.

I wanted to try out a new pattern, so I traced the shirt pattern from BWOF 8/2006, #105. The pattern is beautifully drafted, I didn't have to alter almost anything. I only added waist darts on the back, which is a standard thing for me, since I have a disproportionally narrow waist compared to the rest of my body.

Pantalone sa reverima, deo 3. / Pants with a collar, part 3

Evo kako izgledaju pantalone.

Here's how the pants look. Viewed from afar, they look quite classical. And quite high waisted - I can't remember when was the last time my legs looked that long. The pleats on legs additionally widen them, and the feeling is as if I'm wearing a skirt.

And, when you come closer, you can see a collar on an unexpected place!

Just for the sake of comparison, here's how the sketch looks. I dropped out of buttons - they were too much, even though they looked good on the drawing.

I evo još jedne slike, malo da vas nasmeje ;-)

And, just for fun, here's one more pic ;-)

In the meanwhile, I made an interesting shirt and another one that's almost done, but I'll post about them in a few days.

Šivenje i ekstravagancija / Sewing and extravaganza

The other night, while I was working on my new pants with a collar, I thought that they were rather unusual and I wondered - how much did sewing influence my style? Would I allow myself some extravaganza in clothing if I wasn't practicing this hobby?

Generally, I think that my style is rather classic - feminine, simple lines, sometimes combined with military look. I'd say that most of my experimenting is with colors and accessories - I love shoes in bold colors and I try to combine them with purses and jewelry in same tones. Occasionally I note that people on the street look at me due to colors that I wear, in particular - due to color of my shoes - seems it's unusual to have shoes in lime green or in wild pink here, in Serbia, or at least in Belgrade. People usually hold on to the shades that are safe: black, brown, navy, white and gray shoes are most common over here. From time to time, if the trend allows, one can notice some bold colors too (i.e. the red boots, that were an absolute hit few seasons ago).

No, ponekad i ja imam male izlete ka ekscentričnosti.

Well, sometimes I have my excursions towards eccentricity. These moments don't come often, and I don't think I'm very prominent when it happens, but sometimes I want to strike out a bit and to resist the mass uniform look. As a teenager I was much more bold, and I wore some rather crazy outfits: at some moment I used to wear my mom's business suits (I think I was 12 at the time); later on I wore mismatched sneakers - one was red, the other was purple; the peak of my eccentricity was when I started wearing my mom's maternity dresses... At the time, the most important thing was to be different, no matter what. I'm a mature person now, and I have no need to look wacky, but I still love the unusual stuff.

Every time I see asymmetry, some unusual construction lines and pattern, I'm inspired to sew something similar. Now I lean towards more challenging models, and the pants with a collar are just one of the similar ideas that I've had. Sewing becomes a need to express my creativity, and I'm appreciating more the originality I see at my virtual friends' works. Their ideas frequently move the fashion boundaries, and they leave me speechless more and more, inspiring me to look at the sewing as at the art.

Ali, umetnost nije jednostavna. Zahteva veliku posvećenost, mnogo vremena i ogromno strpljenje. Podrazumeva eksperimentisanje, odvažnost i maštu.

However, the art is never simple. It requires dedication, a lot of time and tremendous patience. It assumes experimenting, courage and imagination. And, since the idea of sewing is to make garments that are functional and wearable, the task is especially complex. But looking at the work of the people I featured in this post, everything looks simple, easy and fun. What I especially like about the clothes I pointed out here is that its owners wear it and enjoy it.

Which brings me back to my question - did they become extravagant thanks to sewing, or were they born like that? Is my need to strike out given to me by birth, or was it forced? Is extravaganza just an instrument to demonstrate what I know and how well I sew? After all, we are all a little bit vain and a bit of exhibitionists, otherwise we wouldn't try this hard to be noticed and to be praised, we wouldn't write blogs nor post our pictures and call for an audience. I don't have an answer to this question, but the more I think of it, the more I wonder if it really matters.

P.P.S. Slike nisu postavljene po nekom određenom redu.

P.S. Thanks to CarolynFedraClaudineCarotte SauvageUrban Don and Hollie for letting me use their pictures in this post. I think there's no better example of extravaganza than them. When I was picking up the pictures, I had to think twice about which ones to feature, since each of these designers has many fantastic and quite unique models.
P.P.S. The pictures were not posted in any particular order

Pantalone sa reverima, deo 2. / Pants with a collar, part 2

Sinoć i danas sam vredno krojila, fircala, peglala i šila, i evo dokle sam stigla.

Last night and today I cut, basted, pressed and sewed hard, and here's where I am at the moment. The pants are almost done. I think I need to widen them a bit at hips (and I've just narrowed them down!). Other than that, I need to finish the waistband and to hem them. I think they don't look bad at all...

Usput, Leakala sajt nudi besplatne krojeve u veličinama 44 i 46 do kraja ovog meseca.

BTW, Lekala website offers free patterns in sizes 44 and 46 by the end of the month.

Pantalone sa reverima / Pants with a collar

After I posted about my experience with the fashion design course, I started thinking intensively about materializing some of my ideas. Pants with a collar are first on my list.

After intense brainstorming on how to make a pattern for these pants, I made a muslin. I used the Bella pattern from Burda Style, and altered it a lot to get the collar detail on the waist. Here's how the muslin looks. The wrinkles on the crotch are there because the muslin was a bit tight, but I'll fix this while sewing.
I'll use a gorgeous gray wool I have in my stash, that was bought before I was even born, and it was supposed to become a suit for my dad. Keep your fingers crossed for me, I'm gonna sew tonight! :-)
