Today I'll show you an alternative way to close the skirt at the hip - with a button closure. You need an additional pattern piece for this, which is not included in the pattern, but as it's a rather simple one it shouldn't be difficult to make it yourself.
We're returning to the point when we assembled the skirt, sewed the side seams and left a slit on the left side seam for the skirt closure. The slit for the button closure should have the same length as the one for a zipper - between 16 and 20 cm. So, measure how long the slit is, making sure you're not calculating the width of the seam allowance (at the waist line) in the measurement.
Add 2 - 3 cm to the measured length, and make a button placket with the same length, and around 5 cm wide. The denim I used was rather thick, so I used the lining scraps for the back of the placket to reduce the bulk. If you're using a thin fabric, you can make a placket in one piece.
With right sides together pin the placket to the slit that matches the back skirt panel. Make sure the top of the placket is aligned with the waist line. Sew the pieces together.
Assemble the lining as described in one of the previous posts and attach it to the skirt by sewing along the waistline. Stop sewing few centimeters away from the slit.
Measure the distance between the spot on the waistline where you stopped sewing the lining and the point in which the placket is sewed to the slit (marked with the yellow arrow, in my case the distance was 5 cm). Add 1 cm to the measurement and mark it on the slit (the yellow line). This will be the point of connection of the lining with the slit.
Mark the same distance reduced by 1 cm on the waist yoke (marked with the yellow arrow).
Sew the lining to the slit, by aligning the layers according to the market points, but as you sew towards the bottom of the slit align the edges of the layers. Cut off the extra fabric.
Fold the vertical edge of the slit towards the lining and sew along the waistline. Cut off the corner of the seam allowances.
Turn the skirt inside out.
The front part of the slit is easier to finish - align the vertical edges of the skirt and the lining along the slit and sew them together. Cut off the corner of the seam allowances and turn the skirt inside out.
Make sure the slit sides form a continuous smooth line along the waistline when the slit is closed. If the slit edges are not aligned, correct their lengths.
Open the buttonholes on the front side of the slit, and sew the buttons to the placket.
